Amyntas
Published in Paperback by Ecco (April, 1988)
Average review score:

AMYNTAS: North African Journals by Andre GideGide's journal of his five year exodus through the exotic cultures of Tunis and Algiers at the turn of the 20th century can only be compared to the senuous language of JUSTINE, the first book of the classic Alexandria Quartet by Lawrence Durrell. This small, delightful book of 159 pages, unfolds to the world that underlies the North Africa today, a century later.
According to the translator,Gide, immediately after writing AMYNTAS, began writing CORYDON, viewed by many as his masterpiece, which dwelt on the place of homosexuality in society and on the nature of human sexuality itself.
Awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1947, Gide's notations are four separate texts documented by year and place. Translation from the original French is done by Richard Howard, a Pulitzer Prize winner and noted translator.

Analysis of Ordinal Data
Published in Paperback by Sage Publications (May, 1977)
Average review score:

All You Need to Know About Analysis of Ordinal DataThis book by Hildebrand is a little gem that I recently discovered in the course of looking up other information. At less than 100 pages, the book is easily overlooked on library shelves, but proves that great things come in small packages. The author presents a clear, concise, and practical exposition of how to analyze ordinal data, and what to do with the results. There is plenty of math for the mathematically inclined, but plenty of practical examples so that non-mathematical researchers can easily perform good analysis of ordinal data. Professional statisticians would, of course, prefer more technical detail, but for those of us "in the trenches" who need to know how to apply statistics, this text is invaluable. I liked the book so much, I bought a copy. What more can I say?

Ancestral Connections: Art and an Aboriginal System of Knowledge
Published in Hardcover by University of Chicago Press (March, 1992)
Average review score:

essential guide to Aboriginal religion and symbolismDr. Howard Morphy's articles and books are consistently well researched and readable; Ancestral Connections is no exception. This book provides a fascinating and rewarding insight into thought system poorly understood by the average layperson. Although this book presupposes a bit of background knowledge of the social systems and cultures of Arnhem Land, a careful reading of this work will unveil a beautiful and intricate symbolic and artistic system, intimately binding the clans of the Yolngu people to their land and the great ancestral beings who created them. Numbering around 5,000 people organized into 40 clans, the Yolngu are one of the largest and most politically influential Aboriginal groups in Australia, and their social system and totemic organization is representative of many of the cultures of the Top End. Their are few detailed and anthropologically sound studies of Aboriginal thought accessible to the non-specialist; Ancestral Connections is highly recommended as it truly humanizes this poorly understood and complex society, so often subject to inaccurate characterization by the popular media and New Age movement. If you want to understand Aboriginal religion and its place in society, read this book...

Ancient Britons: How They Lived
Published in Hardcover by Dufour Editions (June, 1978)
Average review score:

Britain in PrehistoryThis book is a valuable resource on the prehistory of Britain for teens and children in late childhood. Two scholars and an artist collaborated to produce a brief and very true view of a great deal of prehistory. The drawings of Marjorie Maitland decorate every page. They include artifacts and scenarios of daily life. There are basically two editions of 1969: the British by Baker, which is worth a little more, and the American by Praeger. The Praeger edition has light brown boards and gold lettering on the spine.
